The History of NAWIC
How it started
The National Association of women in Construction (NAWIC) began as Women in Construction of Fort Worth, founded on September 11, 1953 by Doris Efird and 15 other women who were looking for a support system. These women were all actively employed in the construction industry and had been doing business with each other for years when they decided to finally meet face to face. This progressive group of women had the foresight to create an atmosphere where they could network and support each other professionally as well as personally.
They wanted to branch out beyond Fort Worth to incorporate other chapters in Texas and nationwide and on May 17, 1955 they became the National Association of Women in Construction.
As word of NAWIC spread, several foreign countries became interested and in 1996, NAWIC signed an international agreement with NAWIC-Australia. Since then they have expanded to include associations with New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.
In its 54 years of service to its members, NAWIC has advanced the causes of all women in construction whose careers range from business owners, office administrators, skilled trades, and beyond. Today, NAWIC has more than 4,500 members nationwide.

NAWIC Greater Jacksonville was proud to host a Hard Hat Tour of the 11 story tower addition at Baptist Medical Center downtown on August 23rd, 2011.
The informative tour allowed participants to view the intracies of this major jobsite while in the construction stage. We were able to see first hand how much of an undertaking this project is, with constant coordination of subcontractors, deliveries and multiple crews.
The tour was led by Evender Spradlin, project executive for Batson-Cook Construction, which is the General Contractor overseeing the project. He attributes the success of the project thusfar to the hard work and efforts of everyone working onsite. The project is running on schedule and has an expected completion date of December 2012.
Many thanks to Batson-Cook Construction, Evender Spradlin, Project Executive; and Marty Elkins, Senior Superintendant for a wonderful tour!
